I think repeat listenings (I would say at least 12 in a row) make it obvious that the answer is ‘divine inspiration’.

You mean them writing it, or it becoming popular? I don’t know about the former, but regarding the latter, there was a major label jamband movement in the early 90s that included them & Blues Traveler (NYC), Big Head Todd, Samples, Widespread, etc.
